Across the Room (No Coincidence, Chapter Two)

If you heard No Coincidence, you know the pattern. A new relationship, her friends arrive with the same soft smile, and a few weeks later it all falls apart. Again and again.

This is chapter two, and it’s the other side of the story. What if one of those friends wasn’t breaking couples up for fun? What if she was doing it because she wanted him for herself?

“Across the Room” is her song. It’s darkwave and shoegaze, with a breathy voice buried in reverb, cold drum machine, and a wall of guitars that swells in the chorus. It’s quieter than chapter one, and a lot more dangerous.

Panel one. He’s lost in the laptop glow. Her friends are laughing on the sofa, and she’s pretending to laugh with them while she watches him.

Panel two. She holds his girlfriend while she cries. Her own eyes are dry, and they’re on the man in the doorway.

Panel three. Every door she closed on someone else was a door she was opening for herself.

Panel four. A wall of photos, and only the girlfriends are crossed out. He’s never the target.

Panel five

Panel five. She’s finally standing next to him. All she needs is for him to look up, just once.
