The Dance (No Coincidence, Chapter Four)

This is the final chapter of No Coincidence.

He kept losing girlfriends and couldn’t work out why. She was the friend on the sofa, clearing every one of them away. Last night he finally looked up, saw the scratched-out photos, and understood. Then she held out her hand in the rain.

“The Dance” is where their two songs meet. His grunge and her darkwave come together in one slow, heavy duet, with fuzz guitars over a cold drum machine and a theremin drifting through the chorus. For the first time in the story, they sing together.

Panel one. For the first time in a year, the laptop goes dark. He turns around, and she’s already there.

Panel two. She won’t apologise. She’d do it all again to have him look at her like this.

Panel three. The friends are gone and the sofa is cold. The record is still playing. “You can hate me in the morning. Just don’t go.”

Panel four. He says she wrote every ending, and he only read the lines. She asks him to write the next one with her.

Panel five. Love or war, it doesn’t matter any more. He takes the dance.
