Astrid is back. Last time we saw her dancing through a Swedish midsummer night in Nattvärme. This time she’s on the move through Stockholm in daylight: down into the metro, onto the train, and through the shopping malls, with her headphones on the whole way. Blå linjen means “The Blue Line”, after the metro line whose stations are carved straight into the bedrock and painted deep blue.

The sound
It’s built in the same mould as Nattvärme, so it’s Nordic noir melodic techno with a Swedish synth-pop heart at 128 BPM. A deep, rolling sub bass and crisp industrial percussion keep it moving like a train on rails, while cold arpeggios and icy pads open up in wide reverb above. Astrid’s breathy, close-up Swedish vocal carries a melancholy pop hook, and the track builds hypnotically to a filtered drop before coming back euphoric but still dark.

The story
It’s a song about shutting the world out. It opens with a station announcement, then “Rulltrappan ner i berget” (“The escalator down into the mountain”). There’s blue light on grey concrete, the headphones go on and the world switches off. “Alla skriker, ingen lyssnar” (“Everyone shouts, no one listens”), she sings, and she simply glides past it all.

The chorus is her escape: “Jag åker blå linjen bort” (“I ride the blue line away”), through the tunnel and through the city, where nobody can reach her.

In the second verse she drifts through malls of glass and light, past signs selling a life. In her head, though, everything is perfect: “Ett hus vid vattnet, ljust och fritt” (“A house by the water, bright and free”).

Then the language changes, just as it did in Nattvärme. In the bridge she whispers in German: “Kopfhörer auf, die Welt wird leise” (“Headphones on, the world goes quiet”), and “Ich träume weiter, bis zur letzten Station” (“I keep dreaming, until the last station”).
Last stop
The song ends back on the platform with “Nästa station… jag stannar kvar” (“Next station… I’m staying on”). The doors open, and she doesn’t get off.
