Lights off. Headphones on. Phone face down on the bedside table.
October is the month when the dark comes in early and stays late, so here are thirteen tracks from my own back catalogue for the nights when the house starts making noises it doesn’t usually make. Analog horror, industrial dread, cold wave, gothic slow-burns and more than one thing in the sky that shouldn’t be there. Most of them were made with Suno; one goes back a lot further.
Play them in order. It’s meant to get darker as it goes, until the very end.
1. Dead Air at 476 MHz
Grandad’s old wooden TV switches itself on after closedown, and something in the snow already knows your address. Warbling tape synths, cold piano and a whispered voice that doesn’t stay calm for long: my first proper go at analog horror.

2. Scarecrow Frequency
A field radio strapped to a scarecrow in a dead cornfield, counting down through the static and calling a name that might be yours. Shoegaze fuzz drifts over the rows like fog while a drop-tuned groove walks slowly towards you.

3. Red Lights Over the Ridge
Midnight on the Extraterrestrial Highway, no signal, no other cars, and three red lights keeping pace over the ridge. Slow, heavy breakbeats, car-radio static and a theremin that won’t leave you alone. Whatever you do, don’t pull over.

4. Varginha Crash
Brazil, 1996. Something comes down in the hills, tries to run, and when they finally catch it, all it says is: please don’t hurt me. Moog, motorik drums and the saddest monster in the catalogue.

5. Red Static Over Varginha
Its younger, louder sibling: cold machine drums, a noisy guitar wash and a thin thread of theremin, like a radio stuck between stations on a wet night. Red eyes blinking through the rain, and the feeling that something is walking where you just stood.

6. Silver Needle Lights
Six minutes of abduction: lights over the field, cold instruments, and a voice in your head that isn’t yours. Moog, motorik drive and prog-metal weight, drifting out towards galaxies you’ll never manage to describe to anyone afterwards.

7. Signal im Beton
A concrete warehouse at 3am, 138 BPM, and every body in the hall frozen while something speaks through the walls. “Wir sind nicht allein.” We are not alone. The hardest track here, so turn it up.

8. Static Minor
No words, just a minor-key pulse, worn analogue synths and a hiss of radio static, like a cassette found in the glovebox of an abandoned car. Lo-fi and tense, it slowly widens out, then strips itself back to almost nothing.
9. Tomorrow’s People
Going back to 2019 for this one. East Berlin, 1986: a punk and a Stasi officer sit side by side on the U-Bahn, scored like a horror film that went straight to Betamax. Grainy, paranoid synths from long before Suno existed.
10. Through Shadowed Dreams
Waking in a world of mist and grey, chasing phantoms down corridors that never seem to end. Post-punk pulse, gothic guitars and a shoegaze haze thick enough to get lost in.
11. The Door
He looks at the outstretched hand and says no. Cold, tired post-punk over chiming guitars and a drum machine, building to a wall of feedback that cuts out completely, and then she sings the last verse alone, in the empty room she made.

12. Before He Answers
Rain, one streetlight, two people an inch apart, and a heartbeat kick that gets louder the longer nobody speaks. Whispered darkwave with a wavering theremin, and it stops dead at exactly the moment you need it not to.

13. Where the Dark Won’t Reach
White walls, cold corridors and a letter he can’t stop reading: two people in two rooms, awake at the same three o’clock. Downtuned guitars, a lurching half-time groove and a vocal held together with tape. It’s the last track for a reason. It’s the only one with a little light in it.

Coming later this month
Tikaboo Peak (14 October), Lantern Static (15 October), Victorian Séance (Signal Lost) (26 October), Nightshift at the Morgue (29 October) and The Run, on Halloween night itself. New posts go up at 8pm UK time.
Want a longer story for the dark? A Light Away From Home, my Area 51 series, begins with track three, Red Lights Over the Ridge, and chapter one, Tikaboo Peak, lands tomorrow night at 8pm UK. And No Coincidence, the story told in songs and graphic-novel panels, is where the last three tracks come from. Start at chapter one, or see every chapter here.
Which one would you play at 3am? Tell me in the comments, and hit Follow so the rest of October finds you.
