The Perimeter (A Light Away From Home, Chapter Three)

Last time, the base woke up. Cal watched trucks crawl between the hangars, a huge door roll open and something long under canvas disappear into the biggest hangar. For the first time in years, he didn’t write “nothing” in his notebook.

This is chapter three of A Light Away From Home, a story told in six songs and six sets of graphic-novel panels. The mountain and the warning signs are real. Everything that happens in the story is made up.

Tonight Cal stops watching. He leaves his tripod on the summit, switches off his headlamp and walks down into the dark, towards a line he’s spent years looking at from far away. The real boundary out there is marked with orange posts and blunt signs, and it’s watched by patrol trucks and sensors. In real life, crossing it is a serious crime and the signs mean exactly what they say. Cal’s story is fiction. Please leave it to him.

“The Perimeter” is the darkest and most driving song in the series so far. It starts with just desert wind and a beat like a heartbeat, then heavy industrial drums crash in over distorted bass, glitchy percussion, radio static and that theremin again. There are only a few whispered and falsetto lines. Then the guitars break loose into the first full, distorted solo of the story, before everything drops away to the hum of a door left open.

The tripod stays. I go.

Halfway down, he reaches up and switches off the red light.

Red light off. Going dark.
Miles of dark between us

After hours of walking, he finds the first of the orange posts.

Orange posts in the dark
Deadly force. I read it twice.

He steps past them anyway. Then a set of headlights comes over the ridge.

Headlights on the ridge. Hit the dirt.
Something out here is watching

He lies flat and doesn’t breathe while the light slides over him.

Lights pass over. I'm stone.

The truck moves on. Cal crawls forward, feeling the ground ahead of him for the buried sensors.

Even the sand is listening
Cold wire under my glove

On the other side of the fence, he lifts the camera. This time, everything is sharp.

Close enough to see now
The hangars tower over me

Someone has left a side door propped open.

A side door, left open

He pushes it wider, and he gets the strangest feeling that he isn’t alone.

Something inside knows I'm here
