A Light Away From Home (A Light Away From Home, Chapter Five)

Last time, at the end of a long, empty corridor, Cal found a sealed room and a small, hurt figure curled up beside a pile of scorched wreckage. Its markings began to glow, and a voice that wasn’t a sound asked him who he was. He told it, in a whisper, that he was just a man who watches the sky, and it decided he wasn’t one of them. Then, as someone in a white suit walked past the door, it reached towards him and said, “Let me show you.”

This is chapter five of A Light Away From Home, a story told in six songs and six sets of graphic-novel panels. The mountain is real. Everything that happens in the story is made up.

This is the chapter the series is named after, and the heart of the whole story. The Visitor shows Cal what’s been happening to it in that room, and what it’s lost. A few of tonight’s panels are uneasy ones, though nothing is graphic. Then Cal has to decide what kind of man he is.

“A Light Away From Home” is the title song, and the darkest sound in the series so far. It’s cold and industrial, with a sparse, detuned piano, gritty synth bass, a clicking mechanical drum machine and static, and the theremin still hovering close by. Cal’s voice starts as a whisper and the Visitor’s vocoder voice answers him. As the song builds, the whisper tightens into a raw shout, until everything breaks into a wall of distorted synths and guitar.

I close my eyes, and it lets me in

The first thing it shows him is the room, the way it has lived it.

Needles. Cold hands.
Lights that never sleep

And the thing it’s most afraid of.

I will never leave this room.

Cal opens his eyes, shaking.

I feel its fear like it's my own

Then it shows him something else. Something very far away.

My family. A light, still waiting.
They are still looking for me.

Cal thinks about his own life: the dark house, the nights alone on the mountain.

Nobody's waiting up for me

Out in the corridor, the footsteps come back.

Footsteps. They stop. Don't breathe.

They move on. Cal lets out his breath and holds out his hand. After a long moment, the Visitor takes it.

Its hand is so small. So cold.

He’s kept his light off all night. Now he switches it back on.

Red light on, so it can see my face
I'll get you home. I promise.
Now somebody's waiting for me

But someone else has been watching too.

Then the alarms begin
