The Hour That Happens Twice, Chapter One: Three O’Clock

午前三時の二度目 第一話「午前三時」

The first chapter of The Hour That Happens Twice, a new four-part ghost story for grown-ups, told in manga panels with a song. Rin works the night shift in a hospital archive. At three o’clock, something happens that shouldn’t.

Rin, wearing a dark raincoat and holding a clear umbrella, walks up a rain-soaked path to the staff entrance of an old hospital at night.
Night shift.

Rin works nights in the basement archive of an old regional hospital. She files, she shelves, she drinks too much tea.

It rains. It always rains on her shift.

Rin sits at her archive desk under a green lamp with a mug of tea and a stack of old files, turning a page.
Two fifty-eight.

The archive is quiet at this hour. Only the lamp, the files and the hum of the lights.

She likes the quiet. Tonight she will wish she didn’t.

An old round wall clock in the archive shows three o'clock while Rin looks up at it.
Three o’clock.

The second hand reaches the top, and the clock strikes three.

Rin freezes with her mug at her lips as the archive lights flicker and the shelves fall into shadow.
The lights.

Every light in the room shudders at once. The shelves go dark, and a cold blue glow creeps in from the corridor.

A mug of tea steams thickly on the desk as Rin's hand trembles beside it.
The tea was hot.

Her tea is steaming again. She had already drunk half of it.

Rin presses a hand to her chest, staring at the wall clock, which reads three o'clock again.
Again.

The clock says three. The files on the desk are in the same place. The tea is full.

It is three o’clock again.

Rin walks down a long straight basement corridor with a flashlight, doors evenly spaced on both walls.
The corridor.

She takes her torch and goes to look. The corridor is the same, but it is colder, and the air smells of old rain.

Far down the corridor, a gurney stands in the fog and a faint pale man in a hospital gown faces away, head bowed.
Nobody there.

At the far end is a gurney that was never there before.

Beside it stands a man in a hospital gown with his back to her. She can see the wall through him.

Rin's wide-eyed face in torchlight, with a faint reflection of a man in a hospital gown in the cabinet glass behind her.
In the glass.

She doesn’t turn around. She looks into the glass of the cabinet beside her.

He is no longer at the end of the corridor.

Wet bare footprints cross the dry archive floor to a shelf where a single file sticks out further than the rest, as Rin kneels beside them.
Footprints.

When the clock moves on and the lights steady, the corridor is empty.

But there are wet footprints on the archive floor. They lead to one shelf, and one file has been pushed halfway out.

Listen: Three O’Clock on Suno

Gothic rock with chiming reverb guitars, a dark driving bassline, a slow heartbeat kick and a haunting female vocal over a faint ticking clock.

Bonus track: The Girl Who Counts the Hours (Choir) on Suno

A cinematic gothic rock instrumental in the style of a dark anime film score, with a wordless choir that rises only a few times, for the man in Room 9.

Next chapter: Rin goes back into the second hour on purpose.

Have you ever felt a night shift that was longer than it should have been? Tell me in the comments.
