Dottie opens the cloakroom door. The cloakroom opens back, all over her saddle shoes.

Among the soggy coats stands something from Pinecrest Pond: scales, a fin crest, enormous worried eyes, and a lily pad pinned on like a corsage. He has been working up the nerve for an hour.

“Come on. Nobody here bites. Well. One fella might, but he’s sulking.”

Everyone screams.

Then everyone applauds. “Best costume yet!” shouts the Mayor. Vernon claps hardest of all; it’s nice not to be the new guy.

Gill-Bert beams, takes one proud step, and meets his own puddle. The punch bowl goes up. The Mayor does not get out of the way.

The Moonlighters, who have never stopped for anything, swing into a swampy garage-rock number. Dottie dances with Gill-Bert. The Count, upstaged twice in one night, folds his arms.

Outside, a siren winds down. Through the fog, an old ambulance pulls up to the town hall, its dome light turning, turning.
