Spooky Sips: Witch’s Brew Mulled Wine & Blood-Red Halloween Punch

Three steaming mugs of dark red mulled wine with cinnamon sticks, star anise and orange slices on a dark wooden table by candlelight

Halloween parties need something to hold. So here are two drinks for grown-ups. One is warm: a fragrant mulled wine that simmers away and makes the whole house smell like October. The other is cold: a big-batch, blood-red punch that looks wickedly festive, especially with a little fog spilling over the bowl. Both are easy, scale up nicely, and are ready before the doorbell starts going.

Witch’s Brew Mulled Wine

Serves: 4–6
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 15–20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) fruity or full-bodied red wine (Merlot, Cabernet, or a red blend works well)
  • ¼–⅓ cup honey, brown sugar, or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1–2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6–8 whole cloves
  • 2–3 star anise pods
  • 4–5 cardamom pods, lightly crushed (optional)
  • 1 orange, sliced (or its zest and juice)
  • Optional: 2–4 tbsp brandy, orange liqueur, or port
  • Optional Halloween flair: a few fresh cranberries or a splash of cranberry juice

Everything that goes in the pot.

Method

  1. Combine the wine, sweetener, spices, and orange slices in a saucepan or slow cooker.
  2. Heat gently over low heat until steaming. Do not boil: boiling cooks off the alcohol and can make it bitter. Hold it at a bare simmer, or just below, for 15–20 minutes.
  3. Taste, then adjust the sweetness or add the optional spirit.
  4. Strain if you like and serve warm in mugs, garnished with a cinnamon stick, an orange slice, or a star anise.

Tips

  • Keep it warm on the lowest hob setting or in a slow cooker on “warm”. The house will smell amazing.
  • Leftovers reheat gently. Again, don’t let it boil.

Blood-Red Halloween Punch

Serves: 12–16
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: none

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (32 oz) 100% cranberry juice, chilled
  • 2–3 cups pomegranate juice or black cherry juice, chilled
  • 2 cups vodka (or spiced rum or bourbon for a warmer note), chilled
  • 1 cup fresh orange or lemon juice (optional, for brightness)
  • ½–¾ cup simple syrup or honey (to taste)
  • 1–2 litres ginger ale or club soda, chilled (add just before serving)
  • Garnishes: orange slices, fresh cranberries, gummy eyeballs, cinnamon sticks, or plastic spiders (not edible, so take them out before serving)

Method

  1. Stir the juices, vodka, citrus, and sweetener together in a large punch bowl or drinks dispenser. Chill until you’re ready.
  2. Just before guests arrive, gently stir in the ginger ale or soda.
  3. Float the garnishes on top. Ladle into glasses, or set up a self-serve station.

Optional dry-ice fog (for dramatic effect only)

Use a nested-bowl setup: punch in the inner bowl, and dry ice plus a little warm water in the outer bowl or cauldron, so the fog spills over the edges. Never put dry ice directly into the punch or drinks. Handle it with gloves or tongs, use food-grade dry ice, keep the area ventilated, and keep it away from kids and pets. The fog is CO₂ gas; solid pieces must never be ingested.

Tips

  • Keep the soda separate until the last minute so the punch stays fizzy.
  • Both recipes are flexible: scale them up for bigger parties and adjust the sweetness and alcohol to taste.

Halloween presentation ideas

  • Serve the mulled wine in mugs with cinnamon sticks and orange slices.
  • For the punch, float gummy worms, candy eyeballs, or blackberries.
  • Use a black cauldron or a dark punch bowl for maximum spooky vibes.
  • Label them “Witch’s Brew” and “Vampire’s Blood” for fun.

Enjoy responsibly. Both drinks are for adults only, so keep a jug of something alcohol-free on the table too, and make sure everyone has a safe way home.
